Civic support organizations reach back to the very beginnings of our villages. The Myrtle Point Lions Club formed in the late 1920s. The Coos County Fair evolved in 1912 from a privately owned and very profitable horse racing club. In small towns like ours, it is so often the same individuals wearing yet another hat, striving to make the community what we expect it to be, our home sweet home with a bit of fun on the weekends at least.
The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce supports business and commerce and much, much more. When a road is needed where a trail no longer suffices, the Chamber accepts a leadership role. Today, most Myrtle Point community events are sponsored, organized and put on by their Chamber.
Why? Because it is the people’s choice. They want to celebrate the fruit of their labors, so there is a Harvest Festival in late September. Sure, the festival includes everything from a “Car Cruise, Show and Shine” to a “Volunteer Fire Department Steak Feed.” In fact, some years there is very little harvest to be seen. It is the spirit of life, of community life that sparkles and persists.
In the winter, Myrtle Point provides for its young. The second Saturday of December is an all-day and into-the-evening visit from the Klaus Family. In fact, many suspect that Santa lives most of the year right here in Myrtle Point and only goes to the North Pole right around Christmas Day. “Christmas Lights the Night” provides young (and not so young) some time on Santas’ laps. Okay! So, the truth is out, Santas live in Myrtle Point, not just one, but every one of the Santas.
